Communications case study · Crowdfunding

Two campaign efforts, two very different outcomes.

The story of a strategy game that began as War Command, became War Haven, and went through two distinct Kickstarter development efforts.

My contributions included campaign management, written messaging, graphics, social media, community engagement, videos and outreach. The material below distinguishes the 2013 campaign that actually ran from the later presentation that was prepared but never launched.

War Command: the original Kickstarter

In 2013, Fringe Games launched a Kickstarter to fund a physical tabletop edition of War Command, a strategy card game originally developed for digital platforms. The campaign ran, but it did not reach its funding goal.

What I did

  • Managed the campaign's execution during a period when the studio founder was away working at sea.
  • Wrote substantial campaign-page copy and developed supporting graphic content.
  • Helped produce promotional video material.
  • Managed the studio and game Facebook pages and studio Twitter activity, writing posts and responding directly to followers.
  • Reached out to games journalists and other developers, and maintained community relationships around the project.

War Haven
Proposed relaunch

War Haven: a new campaign presentation

After the game was renamed War Haven, Fringe Games prepared a second Kickstarter campaign. This was not a simple repost of the first attempt: I produced new campaign graphics and text, with greater editorial control from the beginning.

What changed

  • Reworked the game's crowdfunding story and presentation under its new name.
  • Produced a fresh set of written and visual campaign materials rather than relying on the original campaign page.
  • Developed the proposed campaign before launch, with the opportunity to shape its presentation at an earlier stage.

Before this campaign launched, outside publishers expressed interest in the game. The studio pursued those conversations instead. The proposed Kickstarter was never launched, and when publisher discussions did not lead to a release, the project ultimately ran out of resources.

More materials I created for the project.

Alongside crowdfunding, I assembled the studio and game press kits for outreach, produced an illustrated instruction manual, and helped communicate design requirements within the development team.

I assembled the two press kits as practical tools for pitching the game and supplying journalists with accurate factsheets, artwork, background and media.
